Papers of Helen Lillian Alfred (1889-1966), a native of Lake Geneva (Wis.), who was a strong advocate for socialism, public housing, and world peace. Her papers consist of professional correspondence related to establishing international economic stability after World War II and to the "Citizens Conference on International Economic Union". In addition there are a number of publications and letters to the editor written by Alfred regarding low-income housing including her book "Public Ownership in the U.S.A.: Goals and Priorities," a cash book recording orders and payments for Alfred's "Toward a Socialist America", and personal correspondence from Alfred to Marcia Ballard, her grandniece. A travel journal for 1913 details Alfred's trans-Pacific tour, specifically her impressions of the different cities and ports she visited in Australia, Japan, and Hawaii. Also included are 13 photographs principally of Alfred (1936-1947).
